A Message from Ms. Koekkoek:
July 9, 2012

Dear Parents and Students,
Summer holidays are here and I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of our students on completing another successful year at St. Michael Catholic High School. To our graduates, I want to thank you for the strong leadership you provided our student body this past year and wish you all the best in your future endeavours. To our returning students, I encourage all of you to continue to show your Mustang pride, keep up the hard work in your studies, and stay involved in extra-curriculars in the upcoming year.

In August, I will be moving to another high school, St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Russell. I would like to take a moment to recognize, commend, and thank the outstanding St. Michael Catholic High School community - students, parents, parish, staff and community members- for your amazing support. You have been true champions for our school and, as a result, we have experienced so many successes throughout the years. I will always cherish the time I spent at St. Michael and will forever hold many fond memories of the students, staff, and parents.

I would like to welcome incoming principal Mr. Richard James to our school. Mr. James brings his experience and passion for education to our school. He looks forward to working in this community alongside our vice principal Mrs. Paula Moffat.

This summer I hope all of you take the time to rest and rejuvenate. Continue to find strength in your family, in your faith, and in each other. Remember the journey is made easier when we travel together.

Yours in Catholic Education,

Donna Koekkoek

St Michael Students Set To Travel the World on Exchange Program

Two St Michael students will be leaving their familiar surroundings to continue their education in different parts of the world. Sorrell-Kirkpatrick will be travelling to Ecuador while Shantz will be going to school in Sweden. St Michael Student Performs in Annual Legion Public Speaking Competitions

Seth has been quite successful in his Legion speech competitions. After winning first at St. Michael's, he went on to win first place at the zone, branch, and district levels. He continued on to Lakefield, where he again won first place, this time at the area level. This win granted him the privilege of competing at the Provincial Competition in Niagara Falls in the beginning of May. He was one of four competing in his age level, Ontario being divided into four areas by the Legion command. Seth landed in the top four public speakers from grade 7 - 9 in all of Ontario for the Legion contest. This is really quite an accomplishment. The competition from District level on is quite remarkable and Seth has put in a great deal of time in the last few months continuing to hone the pacing, tone, pauses and inflection in his speech in order to continue improving. Congratulations Seth!

We Will Remember:
A group of dedicated St. Mike's history students has returned from Europe with a wealth of knowledge and experience. Over the Easter Break, they traveled with Mr. Bortolussi and Mr. Finner to locations such as London, Canterbury, Juno Beach, Vimy Ridge, and Paris. The focus of the trip was to participate in the 95th anniversary ceremonies honouring the men who fell at the Battle for Vimy Ridge in World War I. In the photo to the left, the students gather for a group photo at the impressive Canadian National Vimy Monument and in the photo below they are seen at Ecoivres Military Cemetary in France. After months of research, on that particular day these Mustangs were each able to honour the gravesite of an individual fallen World War I Canadian soldier buried at Ecoivres. Check back regularly to learn more about this incredible journey.

EOSSAA AA GOLD - Back to Back to Back!

The Senior Girls soccer players are returning to OFSAA! Congratulations and good luck to Coach Vidoni and Coach Lapenskie. The team defeated Carleton Place High School 2 - 1 in the EOSSAA Final in Pembroke.

Annual Alumni Soccer Game:

On Friday afternoon, May 11, the senior boys soccer players continued a team tradition by taking on a collection of all-star Mustang alumni. Coach Campeau’s soccer team is off to another great start, going undefeated through the first six league games. Playing a talented alumni team gives the boys one more quality test to help prepare for the pressure of the upcoming playoff run. The senior boys soccer team is currently defending back to back EOSSAA “AA” championships.
The alumni squad ranged in age from players like Julian Kalli and Kyle Lewars, who helped lead the soccer team to its first ever provincial championship appearance at OFSAA in 2006, to recent graduates like James Papatzimas, Logan Davidson, Mike Cook, and Liam McTavish who were part of last year’s highly successful OFSAA-level team. Other notables included four-time Mustang Athlete of the Year Jon Wilson from the class of 2010, Antosh Wojski the soccer MVP for 2007-2008, Mike Holwell the soccer MVP for 2008-2009, Spencer Mulvaney - now a member of the coaching staff, and the McGahey brothers, Mike and Keegan, considered by many to be two of the finest defenders in school history.

The veteran players scored early with a customary Tyler Lewars rocket into the back of the net. Tyler recently completed his second year playing CIS soccer for Dalhousie Tigers where he was honoured with the university’s athlete of the week in September of 2011. Mike Holwell stormed his way to the net to chip in the second alumni goal later in the game. The current Mustangs made a valiant comeback attempt in the latter stages of the game with starting keeper Evan Bellefontaine coming out of the net to score a pretty goal. Current team captain Ian Papatzimas led the way with a number of deadly run-ups and strong defence. Jacob Swim, Zack Marques, and Koen Bouwmans also put forth a solid effort. Although their endurance was flagging, the alumni hung on to claim victory this time around. In the handshake, the alumni players enthusiastically expressed their appreciation for the current players' skill and fitness and many veterans wished the present players luck in their quest for a third EOSSAA title in a row.

Coach Campeau and Coach Finner would like to thank the participating alumni players for taking the time to show their loyalty to the Mustang navy and gold yet again.

Senior Boys Basketball: AA LGSSAA Finalists

The Senior Boys basketball team completed their season on Thursday night, falling to the BCI Red Rams in the LGSSAA Championship Game. The boys earned their way to the game with an impressive 8 and 1 league record and a semi-final playoff victory over the St. Mary Crusaders. After a very close first half, the Red Rams made some key shots in the third quarter to take the lead. Unfortunately, the Mustang shooters struggled to respond and momentum shifted. The Mustangs never caught up. Ben Huton again displayed great determination playing on a badly injured ankle. At the conclusion, Coach Finner congratulated his players for their outstanding effort and season-long dedication.
Click here to read the Brockville Recorder and Times article on the game.

Coach Finner would like to thank his graduating players for their commitment to the Mustang basketball program. Dan Murdoch, new to the program this season, was a consummate teammate all season long. Alex Fletcher returned to the team this year and provided his usual intense defence and solid effort. Mike Cook returned for only one semester this school year but showed his dedication by joining the coaching staff for the final few games of the season. Taylor Blouin, a four year veteran of Mustang basketball, recovered from a serious injury this season just in time to help the team in the playoffs. Jacob Swim has been an exceptional Mustang basketballer for four years and his intensity and drive will be sorely missed. Finally, Keegan Hreljac, our captain, completes a highly successful basketball career at St. Mike’s. Keegan was not only known for his impressive skill and powerful physique but perhaps more importantly he is remembered as a gentleman on the court who represented our school with great class. Best of luck to our graduating players!

A Christmas Message from our Principal, Ms. D. KOEKKOEK

Ms. Koekkoek
To the St. Michael Catholic School Community,
As we experience the Advent season, we once again remind ourselves to take time to appreciate the rich gifts that truly bless this season.  In particular, the gifts of patience and kindness come to mind.  The patience that is needed to deal with the business and the distractions that have seemingly have taken over our day to day lives during Christmas. The patience that we need for one another and, most importantly, the patience that we need for ourselves and for the ones we love. Finally, the patience we need as we wait for the celebration of birth of Jesus Christ. Through patience we can spread the kindness that needs to be shared at this time of year.
Trying to simplify the season is not easy but the rewards are great. This month St. Michael Catholic High School has collected cans through the annual canned food drive to support families in our community.  Many students, classes and teachers donated gifts to the Holy Cross Angel Tree initiative.  Blankets were donated to the Shepherds’ of Good Hope and students visited residents at Bayfield Manor. Casual day funds this month will support our local Knights of Columbus organization as well as the Beth Donovan Hospice. Our school community was able to gather and celebrate Mass, and students were given the opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Our bands and choirs will celebrate with joy and song at the annual Christmas Music Concert. Furthermore, we will welcome home young alumnus who are back in town and who stop in to visit and say hello.
Our school will rejoice in the spirit of the season in these and other ways. When we return in the New Year, high school students will work on finishing the semester by completing culminating tasks and examinations.
On behalf of the staff and faculty of St. Michael, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you joy, hope, and peace this Christmas Season and the best wishes for health and happiness in the coming year. Let us share the words of Luke and find strength in the words of the angel:
Do not be afraid, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David, a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.
Have a happy, safe and restful break. Merry Christmas!
