Guest Speaker Dr. Greg Wells Set to Speak to Students

As a scientist, broadcaster, author, coach and athlete, Dr. Greg Wells has dedicated his career to understanding human performance and how the human body responds to extreme conditions.

Dr. Wells is an assistant professor at the University of Toronto. He also serves as an associate scientist of physiology and experimental medicine at The Hospital for Sick Children. There, he and his team explore how to use exercise to prevent, diagnose and treat chronic illnesses in children. 


Throughout his career, Dr. Wells has coached, trained and inspired dozens of elite athletes to win medals at World Championships, the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics. He has studied athletic performance in some of the most severe conditions on the planet, like the Andes Mountains and the Sahara Desert.

Dr. Wells has had his own experience with the challenges of adversity and human extremes. Late in his high school career, he broke his neck in a freak accident while swimming in the ocean and was in a halo brace before undergoing neurosurgery. Told by his doctor that he would never perform as an athlete again, he went on to compete at the international level in swimming. He has competed in events such as the Nanisivik Marathon - 600 miles north of the Arctic Circle - Ironman Canada, and the Tour D’Afrique, a grueling 11,000-kilometre event that is the longest bike race in the world.

Dr. Wells is a frequent contributor to The Globe and Mail and has been an expert source to other top media outlets like ABC News, “20/20,” The Discovery Channel, TSN, CBC and CTV. He also served as the sports medicine analyst for the Canadian Olympic Broadcast Consortium for the 2010 and 2012 Olympic Games.

School Uniform Sale

Mark your calendars for April 27, 2017.  St. Mike's Catholic School Council will be holding a Used Uniform Sale from 3:00pm to 8:00pm, during high school parent/teacher interviews.

If you have any uniforms that no longer fit, please consider donating them to our sale.  Just drop them in the BIG YELLOW BIN found just outside the office.  All proceeds go back into the school to support our students in various ways.


KYC Prom Fashion Show Fundraiser
The Kemptville Youth Centre will be holding a Prom Fashion Show to support the Fairy God Mother Prom dress program. They are looking for interested students to help plan and run this fundraising event. Meetings are held on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 7:30 at the KYC. If you are interested in helping to coordinate a community event, support the Kemptville Youth Centre and earn volunteer hours, please let Mrs. Leach know at the school.

Dual Credits
Earn a college & high school credit simultaneously while gaining valuable experience.  Each fall both St. Lawrence and Algonquin College open college level courses to interested high school students. This is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience while earning a high school & college credit. Courses are available in a variety of programs ranging from Hospitality & Tourism to Welding.

Grade 7 and 8 Math Olympics

Mr Bertram would like to congratulate the grade 7 and 8 math Olympic team for a wonderful job at the COMO Eastern Ontario competition on Saturday, April 1st. The competition took place at St. Patrick High School in Ottawa and featured some of the brightest intermediate math minds in our region.  Lauren Juneau and Hunter Churchill - our grade 8 representatives - proved to be excellent leaders and Emi Niven and Drew Patterson showed excellent energy in their rookie showing.  Well done to our St. Mike's team.

Algonquin Connections

On Thursday May 4th, Algonquin College will be hosting their annual Connections program.  It is an excellent opportunity for grade 10 & 11 students to visit Algonquin College and learn about specific programs that you may be interested in.  Spots are available in the areas of animation, business, architecture, construction, culinary & baking, robotics, interior design, radio & TV broadcasting, veterinary technician and many more.

St Michael students and staff were given a presentation this week on the dangers of opioids that are becoming prevalent with youth.  The seminar was presented to all grades and after a very informative session by members of the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark Health Unit and the Kemptville detachment of the OPP, students and staff were allowed to ask questions.

Important Information Regarding Course Selections for 12017-18

Starting Wednesday, February 8th, 2017, the Guidance department will begin My Blueprint sessions in the library with grades 8 through 11.  These sessions will allow students to give their course choices for next year.  Information from these sessions will be collected in order to create the appropriate amount of sections for particular courses and course levels so that next year’s timetable can be built.  Students will be bringing home information sheets for parents to sign to approve choices.  The choices being made during the My Blueprint sessions are only to garner interest in particular courses and will not constitute final choices for students.  Once the timetable has been built, students will be able to choose their actual schedule for next year and parents will be able to give their final stamp of approval on this schedule.

Important Information  - Grade 7&8 Ski and Skating Trip - February 7th
 

Due to unpredictable weather tomorrow, the elementary skiing and skating trips will be rescheduled to Friday, February 10th.

Please ensure all students participating in the winter activity day be prepared with the proper attire… Winter coat and snow pant, toque, neck warmer, mitts. It is encouraged to bring extra layers as well in order to ensure every one stays warm and enjoys the day.

 
Skaters: A mandatory helmet is required to participate in the day.
 
Skiers: Please arrive at school at 7:30 for attendance, and we are asking parents to respect our pick up time of 4:15 at St. Michael.

NEW OSAP REMOVING FINANCIAL BARRIERS TO COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY

If your child is currently in Grade 12, you should know that applications are now open for college and university programs. The last date for university applications is January 11th. College applications for the fall term should be submitted before February 1st.

Your child may benefit from financial assistance for postsecondary education from the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP). As part of the most significant reform of student assistance in North America, the government of Ontario is removing the financial barriers to attending college or university. 

If your family income is under $50,000, your child’s tuition is covered. Even if you earn more, the new OSAP is still there to help with generous grants that will make sending your child to college or university more affordable.

The Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development has launched a new online calculator to help students and their families find out quickly and easily whether they qualify for free tuition or other grants and supports from the province. We encourage you to find out more at ontario.ca/osap.

SMCHS Drama Department Spring Show Announced

The St. Michael Drama Department is pleased to announce production dates for "Have You Met Miss Jones?" an original play written by Theresa Graham and directed by Taylor Sabourin. The play will run (new dates!) on the evenings of Thursday May 11th and Friday May 12th with curtain time for both nights at 7:00 p.m. Tickets will be available starting in March. Mustang Drama has won twelve local and provincial awards in the last few years and this promises to be our most enjoyable production to date!

Carleton U Offers New Programs

The 22 Push Ups 22 Days challenge is simple – participants do 22 push ups for 22 days.  Each day they share their efforts via a video posted on social media, and call upon a nominee to join in the challenge.  The cause: to raise public awareness regarding PTSD.  According to Wounded Warriors Canada, between 2004 and March 2014, 160 veterans committed suicide; which is greater than the total number of Canadian Armed Forces members killed during the war in Afghanistan.  It is this staggering reality that led four individuals from Ottawa to create the challenge and to my subsequent nomination.
 
                                                                I am honoured to share this challenge with my amazing French Immersion Physical Education class.  Our progress will be posted on the St. Michael’s Facebook page for 22 consecutive school days.   PTSD affects a number of veterans and first responders and is something that many do not talk about because of pride, worry, shame or pain. Our class hopes to help raise national awareness, education and join the fundraising effort so that individuals suffering with these invisible injuries will get the help they require.  Follow us, like us and join our challenge.  Why?
Because one suicide, is one too many.

Scholarships Available

TD is awarding 20 scholarships* to students applying to college or university. Each scholarship is worth up to $70,000 over four years. That’s up to $10,000 for tuition and $7,500 in living expenses each year. Additionally, students receive offers of paid summer employment.

While applicants must be academically capable of entering and successfully completing either university or college, with a minimum average of 75%, the focus of these scholarships is not primarily on rewarding the highest marks. The key criterion is outstanding community leadership. If you know a young Canadian who has made a difference in the community, please let them know about this scholarship.

Please note that the final deadline for receipt of applications is November 18, 2016 so it is important for interested students to begin preparing their submissions soon.

Horatio Alger Scholarships Available

The Horatio Alger Association of Canada is a charitable organization dedicated to the simple but powerful belief that hard work, honesty and determination can conquer all obstacles.  Through the generosity of Horatio Alger Members, the Horatio Alger Association of Canada awards a total of 85 scholarships annually to deserving young people in every province and territory.  Horatio Alger scholarships are awarded to deserving students in financial need who have overcome significant adversity while demonstrating strength of character, strong academics, a commitment to pursuing higher education, as well as a desire to contribute to society.

Ski Trip to Ste Anne & Le Massif All Set

The annual ski trip to Ste. Anne & Le Massif is scheduled for Friday February 17 till Sunday February 19, 2017.

The trip includes:

·        Roundtrip travel via coach bus.

·        3 days of skiing.

·        2 night’s accommodation at deluxe slope-side condos.

SMCHS Student Offered Hockey Scholarship to US College

St Michael student Lauren Bellefontaine’s hard work and perseverance paid off as the Grade 11 student was recently offered a hockey scholarship to Syracuse University, a Division One hockey powerhouse in New York State.  The Kemptville native is presently a member of the Nepean Midget Wildcats AA team which plays in the Provincial Women’s Hockey League.  An Honour Roll student at St. Michael, Lauren also excels on the soccer pitch and plans to focus on Math and Science in her post-secondary education.  Follow Lauren’s play on the ice by linking on to the Nepean Wildcats website at http://nepeanwildcats.com.  Congratulations Lauren from all staff and students at St Michael.
 

Girl's Rugby Club
Mrs Dunn is running a rugby club for girls Tuesday after school for six weeks. Come out and try this exciting sport - no experience necessary. The first session is Tuesday, September 13th. These sessions are designed to be fun and to reinforce skills to help us prepare for the spring season. Please bring signed permission forms to the first session. Forms are available in the art room.

In 2016-17, the Loran Scholarship Foundation will offer up to 126 awards for high school students continuing on to post-secondary studies at selected Canadian Universities.  Students must be in their final year of high school and present a minimum cumulative average of 85%.  Interested students should check out the scholarship board in the Guidance Office or speak to Mr. MacDonald or Ms. Brown.

With a new school year underway, the Loran Scholars Foundation is beginning its search for the 28th class of Loran Scholars. We are deeply grateful for your participation, helping us discover students who are dedicated to serving others, show promise of leadership and have integrity, courage, compassion, grit and a high level of personal autonomy.

Grade 12 students may apply now at
apply.loranscholar.ca. They may also view the application overview and a sample application form. As in previous years, they will need to submit a transcript, request a reference from a teacher or community member and have their school sponsorship confirmed (if applicable) before the deadline.

October 19th is the deadline for school-sponsored applications, and each high school may sponsor up to three students. Additional students may submit direct pool applications (without sponsorship) by October 26th.
Eligibility Criteria for High School Students

  • Be in your final year of uninterrupted full-time studies in high school.
  • Present a minimum cumulative average of 85%.
  • Hold Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status.
  • Be at least 16 years of age by September 1st of the following year.

If you are currently undertaking a gap year for academic pursuits or community service-based activities, after uninterrupted full-time studies, you may still be eligible and should apply to the direct pool.

On Thursday and Friday Mrs. Sylvie Jonsson (of Jonsson's Your Independent Grocer) came in to judge our dog houses. Both 7IA and 7IB had to construct a dog house that would keep a dog warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It also had to be structurally sound and appealing to the public. 

Mrs. Jonsson brought in pins for all of the students and a Franco-Ontarien flag from MPP/Deputee Ottawa-Vanier Madeleine Meilleur.
 
   
Golden Environmental Performance

St. Mike was awarded Gold for this year's Ecoschools assessment. Each year St. Mike takes on environmental initiatives such as: battery, paper, and plastic recycling; ban the bottle campaign; school grounds greening; school grounds clean up; and embedding environmental stewardship in the curriculum and is assessed on the results.
 
St. Mike has made steady progress over the past four years since restarting the program winning Bronze in 2014, Silver in 2015 and of course, Gold in 2016

There will be an important meeting for all students signed up on the 2017
Vimy Memorial trip in April of next year.  All students registered and any students still interested in the trip are to come to Rm 217 at the beginning of lunch on Friday June 17th.  There is still room on the trip and St Michael would like to fill a bus with Mustangs for the tour.  Details are available from Mr. Bortolussi, Mr. Finner or Ms. Bridson.  Join in on the Trip of a Lifetime - over 6500 students from across Canada already enrolled.

European Trip Set For 2017

The CDSBEO FSL Department is offering an Educational Trip to Grade 10, 11, and 12 FSL students to France and Italy which will take place in March 2017.  Students will have an opportunity to participate in an enriching cultural 10-day trip! Students will travel throughout the two countries, where the activities and outings will reflect the curriculum, encompassing French, History, Religious Education, the Arts and French culture.   Please contact  Ms. Lefebvre or Ms. Melnick for further inquiries.
